Dua before sleeping — Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq, and Surah An-Nas Open ↗

When retiring to his ﷺ bed every night, the Prophet ﷺ would hold his palms together, dry spit (A form of spitting comprising mainly of air with little spittle) in them, recite the last three chapters (Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas) of the Quran and then wipe over his entire body as much as possible with his hands, beginning with his head and face and then all parts of the body, he would do this three times.

Qur’anic verse

بِسْـمِ اللَّـهِ الـرَّحْـمَنِ الرَّحِـيمِ
قُلْ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدٌ * ٱللَّهُ ٱلصَّمَدُ * لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ * وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُۥ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌۢ

بِسْـمِ اللَّـهِ الـرَّحْـمَنِ الرَّحِـيمِ
قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلْفَلَقِ * مِن شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ * وَمِن شَرِّ غَاسِقٍ إِذَا وَقَبَ * وَمِن شَرِّ ٱلنَّفَّـٰثَـٰتِ فِى ٱلْعُقَدِ * وَمِن شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ

بِسْـمِ اللَّـهِ الـرَّحْـمَنِ الرَّحِـيمِ
قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلنَّاسِ * مَلِكِ ٱلنَّاسِ * إِلَـٰهِ ٱلنَّاسِ * مِن شَرِّ ٱلْوَسْوَاسِ ٱلْخَنَّاسِ * ٱلَّذِى يُوَسْوِسُ فِى صُدُورِ ٱلنَّاسِ * مِنَ ٱلْجِنَّةِ وَٱلنَّاسِ

112. Surah Al-Ikhlas
Bismi llāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīm.
Qul huwa llāhu aḥad. Allāhu ṣ-ṣamad. Lam yalid wa lam yūlad. Wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan aḥad.

113. Surah Al-Falaq
Bismi llāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīm.
Qul a‘ūdhu bi-rabbi l-falaq. Min šarri mā khalaq. Wa min šarri ghāsiqin idhā waqab. Wa min šarri n-naffāthāti fi l-‘uqad. Wa min šarri ḥāsidin idhā ḥasad.

114. Surah An-Nas
Bismi llāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīm.
Qul a‘ūdhu bi-rabbi n-nās. Maliki n-nās. Ilāhi n-nās. Min šarri l-waswāsi l-khannās. Alladhī yuwaswisu fī ṣudūri n-nās. Mina l-jinnati wa n-nās.

Translation

112. Surah Al-Ikhlas
In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful
Say, "He is Allāh, [who is] One, * Allāh, the Eternal Refuge, * He neither begets nor is born, * Nor is there to Him any equivalent."

113. Surah Al-Falaq
In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful
Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak, * From the evil of that which He created, * And from the evil of darkness when it settles, * And from the evil of the blowers in knots * And from the evil of an envier when he envies."

114. Surah An-Nas
In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful
Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, * The Sovereign of mankind, * The God of mankind, * From the evil of the retreating whisperer,
* Who whispers [evil] into the breasts of mankind, * From among the jinn and mankind."

Dua before sleeping — Ayat Al-Kursī Open ↗

The Prophet ﷺ also said: ‘When you are about to sleep, recite ayat-al-kursi (The verse of the foot-stool, chapter 2:255) till the end of the verse for there will remain over you a protection from Allaah and no devil will draw near to you until morning.'

Qur’anic verse

ٱللَّهُ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ٱلْحَىُّ ٱلْقَيُّومُ ۚ لَا تَأْخُذُهُۥ سِنَةٌۭ وَلَا نَوْمٌۭ ۚ لَّهُۥ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ۗ مَن ذَا ٱلَّذِى يَشْفَعُ عِندَهُۥٓ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِۦ ۚ يَعْلَمُ مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمَا خَلْفَهُمْ ۖ وَلَا يُحِيطُونَ بِشَىْءٍۢ مِّنْ عِلْمِهِۦٓ إِلَّا بِمَا شَآءَ ۚ وَسِعَ كُرْسِيُّهُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ ۖ وَلَا يَـُٔودُهُۥ حِفْظُهُمَا ۚ وَهُوَ ٱلْعَلِىُّ ٱلْعَظِيمُ

Allāhu lā ilāha illā huwa l-ḥayyu l-qayyūm. Lā ta’khudhuhu sinatun wa lā nawm. Lahu mā fi s-samāwāti wa mā fi l-arḍ. Man dha lladhī yašfa‘u ‘indahu illā bi’idhnih. Ya‘lamu mā bayna aydīhim wa mā khalfahum, wa lā yuḥīṭūna bi-šay’in min ‘ilmihi illā bimā šā’. Wasi‘a kursiyyuhu s-samāwāti wa l-arḍ, wa lā ya’ūduhu ḥifẓuhumā. Wa huwa l-‘aliyyu l-‘aẓīm.
Al-Baqarah 2:255

Translation

Allāh - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursī extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

Dua before sleeping — Sūrat al-Baqarah – last 2 verses Open ↗

The Prophet ﷺ also said: ‘Whoever recites the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah at night, those two verses shall be sufficient for him (i.e., protect him from all that can cause him harm).

Qur’anic verse

ءَامَنَ ٱلرَّسُولُ بِمَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْهِ مِن رَّبِّهِۦ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۚ كُلٌّ ءَامَنَ بِٱللَّهِ وَمَلَـٰٓئِكَتِهِۦ وَكُتُبِهِۦ وَرُسُلِهِۦ لَا نُفَرِّقُ بَيْنَ أَحَدٍ مِّن رُّسُلِهِۦ ۚ وَقَالُوا۟ سَمِعْنَا وَأَطَعْنَا ۖ غُفْرَانَكَ رَبَّنَا وَإِلَيْكَ ٱلْمَصِيرُ ۝٢٨٥
لَا يُكَلِّفُ ٱللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا ۚ لَهَا مَا كَسَبَتْ وَعَلَيْهَا مَا ٱكْتَسَبَتْ ۗ رَبَّنَا لَا تُؤَاخِذْنَآ إِن نَّسِينَآ أَوْ أَخْطَأْنَا ۚ رَبَّنَا وَلَا تَحْمِلْ عَلَيْنَآ إِصْرًا كَمَا حَمَلْتَهُۥ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِنَا ۚ رَبَّنَا وَلَا تُحَمِّلْنَا مَا لَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا بِهِۦ ۖ وَٱعْفُ عَنَّا وَٱغْفِرْ لَنَا وَٱرْحَمْنَآ ۚ أَنتَ مَوْلَىٰنَا فَٱنصُرْنَا عَلَى ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ ۝٢٨٦

Āmana r-rasūlu bimā unzila ilayhi min rabbihi wa l-mu’minūn. Kullun āmana billāhi wa malā’ikatihi wa kutubihi wa rusulih, lā nufarriqu bayna aḥadin min rusulih. Wa qālū sami‘nā wa aṭa‘nā, ghufrānaka rabbanā wa ilayka l-maṣīr. ﴾285﴿
Lā yukallifu llāhu nafsan illā wus‘ahā. Lahā mā kasabat wa ‘alayhā ma ktasabat. Rabbanā lā tu’ākhidhnā in nasīnā aw akhṭa’nā. Rabbanā wa lā taḥmil ‘alaynā iṣran kamā ḥamaltahu ‘ala lladhīna min qablinā. Rabbanā wa lā tuḥammilnā mā lā ṭāqata lanā bih. Wa‘fu ‘annā wa ghfir lanā wa rḥamnā. Anta mawlānā fa-nṣurnā ‘ala l-qawmi l-kāfirīn. ﴾286﴿
Sūrat al-Baqarah (2:285–286)

Translation

285. The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in Allāh and His angels and His books and His messengers, [saying], "We make no distinction between any of His messengers." And they say, "We hear and we obey. [We seek] Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the [final] destination."
286. Allāh does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people."

Dua before sleeping — in Your name I lie down and rise Open ↗

If one of you rises from his bed and then returns to it, he should dust it with the edge of his garment three times, for he does not know what has occurred in his absence, and when he lies down, he should supplicate:

بِاسْمِـكَ رَبِّـي وَضَعْـتُ جَنْبِـي، وَبِكَ أَرْفَعُـهُ، فَإِنْ أَمْسَـكْتَ نَفْسِـي فَارْحَـمْهَا، وَإِنْ أَرْسَلْتَـهَا فَاحْفَظْـهَا بِمَـا تَحْفَـظُ بِـهِ عِبَـادَكَ الصَّـالِحِـينَ

Bismika rabbī waḍa‘tu janbī, wa bika arfa‘uh, fa’in amsakta nafsī fa-rḥamhā, wa in arsaltahā fa-ḥfaẓhā bimā taḥfaẓu bihi ‘ibādaka ṣ-ṣāliḥīn.

Translation

In Your name, my Lord, I lay down and in Your name I rise, so if You should take my soul, then have mercy upon it, and if You should return my soul, then protect it in the manner You do so with Your righteous servants.

Dua before sleeping — entrusting my soul to Allah Open ↗

اللَّهُـمَّ إِنَّـكَ خَلَـقْتَ نَفْسِـي وَأَنْتَ تَوَفَّـاهَـا، لَـكَ مَمَـاتُهَـا وَمَحْـيَاهَـا، إِنْ أَحْـيَيْـتَهَـا فَاحْفَظْـهَـا، وَإِنْ أَمَتَّـهَـا فَاغْفِـرْ لَهَـا. اللَّهُـمَّ إِنِّــي أَسْـأَلُـكَ الْـعَـافِيَـةَ

Allāhumma innaka khalaqta nafsī wa anta tawaffāhā, laka mamātuhā wa maḥyāhā, in aḥyaytahā fa-ḥfaẓhā, wa in amattahā fa-ghfir lahā. Allāhumma innī as’aluka l-‘āfiyah.

Translation

O Allaah, verily You have created my soul, and You shall take it's life, to You belongs it's life and death. If You should keep my soul alive, then protect it, and if You should take it’s life, then forgive it. O Allaah, I ask You to grant me good health.

Dua before sleeping — protection on the Day of Resurrection Open ↗

The Prophet ﷺ would place his right hand under his cheek when about to sleep and supplicate:

اللَّهُـمَّ قِنِـي عَذَابَـكَ يَـوْمَ تَبْـعَثُ عِبَـادَكَ (ثلاثاً)

Allāhumma qinī ‘adhābaka yawma tab‘athu ‘ibādak (three times)

Translation

O Allah, protect me from Your punishment on the day Your servants are resurrected

Dua before sleeping — Tasbīḥ Fāṭimah Open ↗

Shall I not direct you both (The Prophet ﷺ was addressing Ali and Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with them - when they approached him for a servant) to something better than a servant? When you go to bed, say:

سُبْحَـانَ اللَّهِ (ثلاثاً وثلاثين)

الْحَمْـدُ لِلَّهِ (ثلاثاً وثلاثين)

اللَّهُ أَكْـبَرُ (أربعاً وثلاثين)

Subḥāna llāh (×33)

Al-ḥamdu lillāh (×33)

Allāhu akbar (×34)

Translation

How perfect Allah is. (thirty-three times)

All praise is for Allah. (thirty-three times)

Allah is the greatest. (thirty-four times)

When to recite

Before going to sleep, 100 times total.

اللَّهُـمَّ رَبَّ السَّمَـاوَاتِ السَّبْـعِ وَرَبَّ الْعَـرْشِ الْعَظِـيمِ، رَبَّنَـا وَرَبَّ كُلِّ شَـيْءٍ، فَالِـقَ الْحَـبِّ وَالنَّـوَى، وَمُـنَزِّلَ التَّـوْرَاةِ وَالْإِنْجِـيلِ، وَالْفُـرْقَانِ، أَعُـوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَـرِّ كُلِّ شَـيْءٍ أَنْتَ آخِـذٌ بِنَـاصِيَتِهِ. اللَّهُـمَّ أَنْتَ الْأَوَّلُ فَلَـيْسَ قَبْـلَكَ شَيْءٌ، وَأَنْتَ الْآخِـرُ فَلَـيْسَ بَعْـدَكَ شَيْءٌ، وَأَنْتَ الظَّـاهِرُ فَلَـيْسَ فَـوْقَكَ شَيْءٌ، وَأَنْتَ الْبَـاطِنُ فَلَـيْسَ دُونَـكَ شَيْءٌ، اقْـضِ عَنَّا الـدَّيْنَ وَأَغْـنِنَا مِنَ الْفَـقْرِ

Allāhumma rabba s-samāwāti s-sab‘i wa rabba l-‘arši l-‘aẓīm, rabbanā wa rabba kulli šay’, fāliqa l-ḥabbi wa n-nawā, wa munazzila t-tawrāti wa l-injīl, wa l-furqān, a‘ūdhu bika min šarri kulli šay’in anta ākhidhun bināṣiyatih. Allāhumma anta l-awwalu falaysa qablaka šay’, wa anta l-ākhiru falaysa ba‘daka šay’, wa anta ẓ-ẓāhiru falaysa fawqaka šay’, wa anta l-bāṭinu falaysa dūnaka šay’, iqḍi ‘anna d-dayna wa aghninā mina l-faqr.

Translation

O Allaah, Lord of the seven heavens and the exalted throne, our Lord and Lord of all things, Splitter of the seed and the date stone, Revealer of the Torah, the Injeel (Gospel) and the Furqan (the Qura'n), I take refuge in You from the evil of all things You shall seize by the forelock (i.e., You have total mastery over). O Allaah, You are The First, so there is nothing before You, and You are The Last, so there is nothing after You. You are Aththahir (Manifest), so there is nothing above You, and You are Al-Batin (Hidden), so there is nothing closer than You. Settle our debt for us and spare us from poverty.

Dua before sleeping — gratitude for food and shelter Open ↗

الْـحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْـعَمَنَا وَسَقَـانَا، وَكَفَـانَا، وَآوَانَا، فَكَـمْ مِمَّـنْ لَا كَـافِيَ لَهُ وَلَا مُـؤْوِيَ

Al-ḥamdu lillāhi lladhī aṭ‘amanā wa saqānā, wa kafānā, wa āwānā, fakam mimman lā kāfiya lahu wa lā mu’wiya

Translation

All praise is for Allaah, Who fed us and gave us drink, and Who is sufficient for us and has sheltered us, for how many have none to suffice them or shelter them.

Dua before sleeping — refuge from the evil of the self and Shaytan Open ↗

اللَّهُـمَّ عَالِـمَ الْغَـيْبِ وَالشَّـهَـادَةِ فَاطِـرَ السَّمَـاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ رَبَّ كُلِّ شَـيْءٍ وَمَلِـيكَـهُ، أَشْهَـدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَـهَ إِلَّا أَنْـتَ، أَعُـوذُ بِـكَ مِـنْ شَـرِّ نَفْـسِـي، وَمِـنْ شَـرِّ الشَّـيْـطَانِ وَشِـرْكِـهِ، وَأَنْ أَقْتَـرِفَ عَلَـى نَفْسِـي سُوءًا أَوْ أَجُـرَّهُ إِلَـى مُسْـلِـمٍ

Allāhumma ‘ālima l-ghaybi wa š-šahādati fāṭira s-samāwāti wa l-arḍi rabba kulli šay’in wa malīkah, ašhadu an lā ilāha illā ant, a‘ūdhu bika min šarri nafsī, wa min šarri š-šayṭāni wa širkih, wa an aqtarifa ‘alā nafsī sū’an aw ajurrahu ilā muslim

Translation

O Allaah, Knower of the seen and the unseen, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Lord and Sovereign of all things, I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except You. I take refuge in You from the evil of my soul and from the evil and shirk of the devil, and from committing wrong against my soul or bringing such upon another Muslim.

Dua before sleeping — submitting to Allah upon the fitrah Open ↗

Before you go to bed perform ablutions as you would for prayer, then lie down on your right side and supplicate:

اللَّهُـمَّ أَسْـلَمْـتُ نَفْسِـي إِلَـيْـكَ، وَفَـوَّضْـتُ أَمْـرِي إِلَـيْـكَ، وَوَجَّـهْـتُ وَجْهِـي إِلَـيْـكَ، وَأَلْـجَـأْتُ ظَهْـرِي إِلَـيْـكَ، رَغْـبَـةً وَرَهْـبَةً إِلَـيْـكَ، لَـا مَلْـجَـأَ وَلَا مَنْـجَـا مِنْـكَ إِلَّا إِلَـيْـكَ، آمَـنْـتُ بِـكِـتَـابِـكَ الَّـذِي أَنْـزَلْـتَ وَبِـنَـبِـيِّـكَ الَّـذِي أَرْسَـلْـتَ

Allāhumma aslamtu nafsī ilayk, wa fawwaḍtu amrī ilayk, wa wajjahtu wajhī ilayk, wa alja’tu ẓahrī ilayk, raghbatan wa rahbatan ilayk, lā malja’a wa lā manjā minka illā ilayk, āmantu bikitābika lladhī anzalt, wa binabiyyika lladhī arsalt.

Translation

O Allah, I submit my soul unto You, and I entrust my affair unto You, and I turn my face towards You, and I totally rely on You, in hope and fear of You. Verily there is no refuge nor safe haven from You except with You. I believe in Your Book which You have revealed and in Your Prophet (ﷺ) whom You have sent.

When to recite

Before going to sleep, as the last words spoken.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Whoever says this and dies in his sleep, has died in a state of the natural monotheism (Fitrah)."

Footnotes

Dua before sleeping — Lord of the seven heavens

Tawrah: The book revealed to Moosa (Alayhi s-salam).
Injeel: The book was revealed to Easa (Alayhi s-salam).
Furqan: One of the many names of the Quran, means: The Criterion which distinguishes between truth and falsehood.
Aththahir: Indicates the greatness of His attributes and the insignificance of every single creation in respect to His greatness and Highness, for He is above all of His creation as regards His essence and attributes.
Al-Batin: Indicates His awareness and knowledge of all secrets, of that which is in the hearts and the most intimate of things, just as it indicates His closeness and nearness to all in a manner which befits His majesty.

Dua before sleeping — refuge from the evil of the self and Shaytan

Shirk: to associate others with Allaah in those things which are specific to Him. This can occur in:
(1) Belief, e.g., to believe that other than Allaah has the power to benefit or harm;
(2) Speech, e.g., to swear by other than Allah; and
(3) Action, e.g., to bow or prostrate to other than Allah.
